AG Players Wear Black Arm Bands To Honor The Passing Of Mack Mason’s Grandfather
On Saturday Night, the AGs took the field wearing black armbands to honor the loss of their teammate’s grandfather. AG flyhalf Mack Mason got word on Friday morning that his grandfather, Lex Mason, had passed away back home in Australia.
On the opposite side of the world from his family, Mack Mason found solace in the fact that he would not have to face grief alone. He had 36 teammates from every corner of the world, that at this moment; happened to be in his corner.
Following the team Captain’s run on Friday, Mason told the team of his decision to wear a black armband on Saturday Night to honor his grandfather Lex. Without hesitation, his teammates decided they would wear the armbands too.
“It meant a lot to me and my family that the players and the organization had my back and that I wasn’t alone even so far from home,” says Mack Mason.
The AGs battled with RugbyATL and traded leads late into the match. One miraculous turn of fate saw Conner Mooneyham gather his own kick to score a try to take the lead. With two minutes to play, RugbyATL snatched back the lead again. Then with no time remaining and down by two points, the AGs earned a penalty that set up a match-winning penalty kick attempt for none other than Mack Mason.
Mason lined up the match-winning kick and slotted it to the jubilation of his teammates and the home crowd. That kick and that win made history in Austin as the first three-match win streak in the club’s history.
“It’s those moments as a kicker you want, as soon as I hit it I knew it was going through,” says Mason. “I think grandad guided that over for me, it definitely was a special night – one that I’ll never forget.”
In a season unlike any other; chock-full of unprecedented obstacles, every player on this squad is certain to feel the highs of a win like Saturday Night and the lows of loss or hardship. The important value that seems to echo through this team is that the AGs are all in this together.
