AG Rugby Acquires MLR Veteran Loose Forward Luke Beauchamp

AUSTIN, TX (November, 30th 2021) AG Rugby is elated to announce the acquisition of Australian-born flanker Luke Beauchamp. ‘Beachy’ played the last three seasons with the state-rival Houston Sabercats and captained the ‘Cats in 2020. 

Beauchamp is looking forward to making an impact in the AG’s pursuit of the MLR Championship shield in 2022. “I’m really grateful to sign with the AGs, they’re a great franchise in the MLR and it’s awesome to mix in with this young, hungry group that’s ready to challenge for the MLR Championship,” says Beauchamp.

AG Head Coach Sam Harris jumped at the opportunity of signing an MLR veteran like Beauchamp. “Luke was a contributor and really a talisman for his last team – that was clear every time we played against him last season. I think you will see the best of Luke Beauchamp over the next two years, he’s in a fresh environment and he’s got something to prove – he’ll be a leader by action in this team.”

Beauchamp is a native of Brisbane, Queensland in Australia and made his first professional debut with the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby in 2012. Beauchamp was an impact player in the National Rugby Championship with Queensland Country before making the move to Brisbane City where he made 17 appearances in the NRC in 2015-2016. In 2019, he made the move to United States and Major League Rugby signing with the Houston Sabercats and became a mainstay in the lineup for three seasons.

In 2020, Beauchamp played in 12 matches for the Sabercats. He played all 80 minutes in every match he was featured in, save for a Week 5 injury that forced him to come off at halftime, and subsequently kept him out of the lineup for the four matches he missed mid-season. Despite missing time, Beauchamp was amongst the team leaders in carries, meters, tackle count, lineout takes and breakdown steals.

Beauchamp made the move to Austin two weeks ago and immediately jumped into the team’s sports performance testing and off-season program. “The first couple weeks have been great, I’ve been immediately welcomed into the AG family and there’s a really special feeling here in Austin,” says Beauchamp.
