Koch started playing rugby his sophomore year of high school and was the founder of his high school’s rugby club.

He went on to play rugby for Dartmouth and led the team to four Ivy League championships and was a two-time captain. Koch was drafted in the first-ever professional Major League Rugby draft. He was the 16th draft pick of 24 players selected out of 400 applicants.
